My foster grandmother, Beth, was no sweet old lady, by any means. Years of experience taught her to be that tough old bird that everyone talks about. But she was my grandmother, and I loved her. She never let anyone walk over her. She loved gardening. She was a member of the National Audobon Society and the Daughters of Veterans of Foreign Wars. She loved birds and dogs. She always baked something. When I was pregnant and craving Strawberries and brownies, she baked brownies and got me strawberries. When I wanted peppermint ice cream for my birthday party, she went to about 5 different Braum's in Tulsa to find it!

Excerpts from The Tulsa World's Letters To The Editor
4/17/1996 Male Chauvinist Bee?
Male chauvinism has struck again. Your April 5 story on the
Northeastern Oklahoma Spelling Bee gives the winner -- a girl -- a picture 1 inch by 1 1/2 inches, whereas the second-place winner -- a boy -- has a picture 5 1/4 inches by 9 1/4 inches. Explain that to our satisfaction, please.

Editor's note: It had nothing to do with gender. The spelling bee ran later than the editors expected. The photo of the boy was on hand for earlier editions. A smaller space was reserved for the winner.
1/30/1995 Taxpayer Alert
Do you want to pay for the clean-up of industry pollution? Do you want to pay industry not to pollute? Do you want the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts severely weakened? Do you want Safety in the Workplace laws devastated? The fine print in the "Contract With America" does just that.
